Talk is cheap

So write-in mayoral candidate Ginny Dickey proposes “an economic development plan that can add jobs” and “emphasizing activities/events for kids and parents.” (Election series: Attracting young families, The Times, 7/20/16.)

Too bad Ginny Dickey didn’t support economic development when she was on the Town Council. Had she done so, her words would not ring so hypocritical today. I remember one meeting where Dickey was the sole “no” vote on a measure to grant businesses additional needed signage on their storefronts. That was hardly a pro-economic development position.

And if Dickey really wants to bring more family and kid-friendly activities and events to town, she should be supporting the re-election of our current popular mayor, Linda Kavanagh, instead of running a quixotic, write-in campaign against her.

And if Dickey really wants to bring more family and kid-friendly activities and events to town, she should be supporting the re-election of our current popular mayor, Linda Kavanagh, instead of running a quixotic, write-in campaign against her.

Mayor Kavanagh brought in or zealously promoted many family-friendly events, including “Slide the City,” the Kite Festival, Halloween In the Hills and more. She was also a major facilitator of the return of the July 4th fireworks display and pushed to make it free to the public.

Mayor Kavanagh also kept funding for “Movie in the Park” in the budget, when it was threatened by cuts. She personally donated to the new Rotary Musical Instrument Park and created the Fountain Hills Art Walk, which includes a young students’ art education walk. Finally, she was a big promoter of capital improvements in our parks system, including the renewal of the tennis courts.

Talk is cheap and hypocritical talk is offensive. I have seen both Mayor Kavanagh and Ginny Dickey at Council meetings. I intend to vote for Mayor Linda Kavanagh, a hard-working, sincere, accessible public servant with a resume of town volunteer work that puts Ginny Dickey to shame. Go Linda!
