'Teens Giving Back' program starts second season at library

The new season for “Teens Giving Back” gets underway Saturday, Sept. 30.

The program, sponsored by Fountain Hills Library, was the recipient of “100 Brilliant Ideas at Work.” The award was presented by the National Association of Counties (NACo) for the Teens Giving Back program, which enables teens to earn community service hours.

Heather Nelsen, who is the library’s teen services librarian, said participants in the first year of the program came up with the projects they wanted to do. Projects varied from month to month and included making tote bags for a domestic violence shelter, working with Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Fountain View Village, Fearless Kitty Cat Rescue and Home Delivered Meals. The format this year will be the same.

Their first project begins with a soft kick-off where participants will be making “cupcakes” out of slipper socks. The cupcakes will be given to patients at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale.

A larger program is planned for Saturday, Oct. 14, where teens will partner with Fearless Kitty Rescue to host a kitten adoption event outside the library.

Nelsen said that although the kitten adoption program is technically still a teens giving back event, “the program will be open to all ages.”

She said some kittens will be available for same-day adoption. Information on future adoptions also will be available. A craft table will be set for visitors to make toys to donate to Fearless Kitty.

The adoption event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon outside the library.

The Teens Giving Back program continues through April. All teens are invited to participate.
