The consequences of direct select with Fountain Hills streets

OPINION — The current mayor/council believes their selection of the streets to be repaired is a good idea. It's called “direct select.” Why is it called that? It goes outside the process established to repair our town's 160 miles of street infrastructure.

Streets are the town's biggest asset. And our biggest liability. In 2022, the town received a consultant report that completed an assessment of all the town's streets for their condition, to provide an estimate of the costs to repair them, and to recommend a strategy to do the repairs.

All to make sure the town does not fall further behind in its repair strategy. To add to that, the town worked with a volunteer citizen committee for more than 18 months to review and make additional recommendations about process.
