As I write this, the Fourth of July holiday is only a few days away. As you are reading it, well, it has already passed.
Hopefully you got out and enjoyed some grilling, fun and games or even ventured to Fountain Park to take part in the festivities right here in town.
As a few folks called to inform us, we kind of dropped the ball on that count last week. We had stories about the Fourth at the Fountain festivities running weeks before the actual event, but completely forgot to include it in our June 28 coverage.

For that, I am sorry. I take a little comfort in the fact that I was not alone in the oversight, but it’s the kind of thing we try to avoid here at the paper.
The Times comes out on Wednesdays and, this year, the Fourth of July fell on a Tuesday. When planning each issue, we look forward to the week ahead to make sure we aren’t forgetting any major events on the horizon. I guess some wires got crossed in my mind and an alarm didn’t go off about the fact that this particular issue you hold in your hands would be running the day after the Fourth, so a final reminder about the big event in Fountain Park would be ever-so-slightly late.
Still, we got the details posted online and it looks like plenty of folks were sharing the story on social media. Also, like I said, we had several stories about the upcoming event running the week’s prior, just not the week immediately before the event.
In short, I hope everything went off without a hitch and those of you who wanted to attend still dropped by Fountain Park. I’m fairly confident that folks have come to know that a Fourth of July celebration goes down in Fountain Hills each year, but we still like to give those kinds of events plenty of play right before they occur.
If that caused any confusion in your life, again, I apologize.

Speaking of July 4th, I’m having a little trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that the first month of summer is already in the rearview mirror. Then again, it was a pretty packed June.
Phoenix Comicon took place the week of high school graduation, so that turned out to be a whirlwind week for yours truly. That was also the time we were capping off a whole bunch of extra projects around the office, including a bunch of coverage for the upcoming Community Guide, the graduation edition of the paper and even a stack of contest entries for the Arizona Newspaper Association.
Less than two weeks later, I was on a plane to Los Angeles for my annual visit to the week-long Electronic Entertainment Expo. I won’t risk boring you with the details here but, if that’s something you’re interested in, drop by the office sometime and I’ll talk your ear off about it.
The week immediately following that was filled with plenty of catch-up work and, boom, now we’re already into July.
My dad always warned me that time flies faster the older you get and, boy-howdy, he wasn’t joking.
Anyway, I’m going to do my best to enjoy what’s left of the summer, so you try and do the same!
