The TLC

Although I live in Scottsdale, I have been a student at the Technology Learning Center in Fountain Hills and am very upset to learn that there will no longer be regularly scheduled workshops.

I have benefited from these over the years and so have many of my friends. I’m surprised that the Town and Community/Activity Center are not taking a stand on this and working to keep this service available to the residents.

The TLC volunteers give very generously of their own time to teach these classes and give seniors like me an opportunity to learn about today’s advancing technology. They have helped me learn how to use my smartphone, make my way through the confusing Windows 10 operating system, organize my calendars and shop and bank safely on the internet. These volunteers have been willing and extremely patient working with seniors like me every week.

Where else can seniors go for this kind of technical support? The environment at TLC has been welcoming and very encouraging, even if I ask the same question more than once or twice.

I hope a solution can be reached so that these invaluable workshops can continue. TLChas tried to adjust to not having full-time access to the computer lab, which they had in the past. I have witnessed how the volunteers must arrive early to set up the computers and hook-up their television or projector for each workshop. And then they have to stay after the workshop ends to shut everything down and put away all the equipment.

My question: Why is the Town making it so difficult for these volunteers? All they are trying to do is enrich the lives of seniors. And at no cost to the Town, as I understand it.
