The true value of the River of Time Museum in Fountain Hills

OPINION — As we deliberate the River of Time Museum’s lease, we must elevate our perspective beyond a simple financial transaction. For 25 years, the River of Time Museum has served as a beacon of public purpose — enriching our schools, preserving our heritage and drawing visitors who, in turn, support local businesses and strengthen our local economy.

The Gift Clause in the Arizona Constitution exists for a sound reason: to ensure that public resources advance a defined public purpose and that the community receives fair and measurable consideration. By any reasonable standard, the museum fulfills that obligation. Through free educational programming, careful preservation of artifacts and its unique role as a cultural destination, it provides value that extends far beyond what traditional market rent can quantify.

This is not a request for a handout; it is an opportunity to formalize a partnership. When our town marked its 50th anniversary in 2020, we created the History and Culture Advisory Commission to elevate awareness of our community’s story. The commission’s charge is informational and advisory — not archival.
