Thomas: Addressing misconceptions about local taxes

Given the misinformation regarding the school bond (the alleged “massive tax hike”) that some residents and groups disseminated before that election, I want to correct any misconceptions residents might have regarding town property taxes, due to Barry Wolborsky’s comments at the Jan. 17 Town Council meeting.

At that meeting, Mr. Wolborsky stated “Homeowners are responsible for the majority of revenues in Fountain Hills from their sales tax revenue and from their property taxes which go to the state and county and then come back to the town.” The town does not have a primary property tax and thus does not derive any revenue from that type of property tax. The property taxes that homeowners, renters and businesses pay are secondary property taxes; those are used to fund non-town entities.

A check of my most recent property tax bill shows “No City Taxes” but secondary property taxes for the school district, EVIT, the community college district and the Sanitary District, to name a few. The town does not have any secondary property taxes either and thus does not derive any revenue from that type of property tax. None of the secondary property taxes that homeowners, renters and businesses pay come back to the municipal entity known as the Town of Fountain Hills.

Mr. Wolborsky has stated he has taught statistics. During council meetings, he frequently questions the validity of statistics that are presented by town staff or other presenters. Whether talking statistics or taxes, accuracy is imperative.
