Thomas: Concerning the school planetarium and political signs
In a letter on Sept. 27, Mary Ann Bosnos stated “the board recently voted to spend $200,000 (privately funded) to put a small planetarium in the school library. Think of how much good that money could do if spent elsewhere.” However, according to Dr. Jagodzinski’s presentation at the Sept. 19 Council meeting, the $105,000 (not $200,000) cost of the planetarium was covered completely by the Peter and Theresa Conti Foundation ($75,000) and the PTO ($30,000).
Since it was their money, the Conti Foundation and the PTO have the right to choose which school projects they support. If/when Ms. Bosnos donates some of her money to the school, then she can choose the projects she wants to support. I hope the District will place a plaque on the planetarium, not only to honor the generous donations of the Conti Foundation and the PTO, but to inform anyone who wants to know the facts that no public funds were spent for the planetarium.

On another topic, at the Sept. 19 Council meeting, Crystal Cavanaugh claimed the pro-bond group violated the spirit of the sign ordinance over the weekend of Sept. 15-17. However, what Ms. Cavanaugh failed to mention in her comments is the con-bond ROT group she heads up violated the actual letter of that ordinance that weekend by leaving their signs in the Palisades right-of-way past official sunset on Sunday night.
Given that she is a staunch member of the party that touts itself as one of law and order, I would have thought Ms. Cavanaugh would be 100% compliant with all laws and regulations at all levels of government, including the town’s.
The lesson here is that people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. The relevant section of the town’s Zoning Ordinance is Section 6.08.D.2 and 3.
