Time for more home improvements

Astute readers of our publications may remember I wrote a guest column months ago discussing my own home improvement project at the time.

“Home improvement” was the theme of that particular Let’s Go! issue, so Editor Linda McThrall graciously stepped aside that month and granted me some space for my own words.

The dominant subject of my column was to warn guys of implementing home improvement projects. At least in my case, one thing tends to typically lead to another, so a simple idea of replacing some interior window blinds led to 63 other interior home improvement projects, including tiling the floor of two bedrooms and painting the interior of about three-quarters of the house.

As of Oct. 21, 2015, I wish I could say that all the planned and unplanned home improvements are complete, but I cannot.

I would say 90 to 95 percent of it is done, but I still have some interior doors I need to paint (all the other trim work is done, however).

But my sad little story doesn’t end there.

While the summer months provided an excuse to stay indoors to enjoy the cool air conditioning, I’m afraid the home improvement bug may now be creeping outdoors since the weather has chilled below 138 degrees.

The outdoor fireplace and planter boxes were in need of some repairs, so we just had that work completed.

And, just like inside, one thing leads to another…

The pool deck could use some work, the landscaping needs sprucing up, the tree needed trimming and I’m quite afraid to even look at the condition of the pool pumps or the exterior paint on my house.

Yikes!

Perhaps home improvements could best be compared to street maintenance projects – they don’t ever end.

The major improvements to Saguaro Blvd. appear to be in rather good shape. The contractor officially has until Oct. 30 to get all four lanes open.

The town last week also initiated some badly-needed street maintenance around McDowell Mountain Elementary School and Glenbrook Blvd.

Too bad the existing pot of money allocated for street maintenance won’t stretch much beyond that – until next year.

Voters scoffed at the $30 million bond issue a couple of years ago, but that’s the amount of money it’s going to take to perform the needed street maintenance in town.

Sure, the town will now take its time year to year and spend just what it has on hand for street maintenance, but in the long run it will cost more, because the streets will continue to deteriorate even more.

Kind of like home improvement projects…
