Tonto National Forest fire crews are out in force along the forest boundary with the Verde Communities on Thursday. Firefighters were conducting controlled burning of brush and debris gathered up over the winter months.
The work is being done in the area between the Verde River and the Verdes. The objective is to reduce fire fuel and create a buffer between the wildland areas and the residential neighborhoods.
Forest officials have been waiting for the right conditions and clearance from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality before conducting the burn.
