Tonto National Forest closes forest access due to fire

Cub Fire burning near SR 87 east of Fountain Hills

The Tonto National Forest Mesa Ranger District has issued an emergency closure order for public health and safety for the area in the vicinity of the Cub Fire burning along State Route 87 (Beeline Highway) east of Fountain Hills.

The closure was issued Tuesday, June 17, and is in effect through Monday, June 30. It includes all motor trails within the vicinity of the fire area. It also includes the Mesquite Staging Area for off-road vehicles. Details can be found at fs.usda.gov/r03/tonto/alerts/03-12-03-25-11-cub-fire-emergency-closure-order.

The Cub Fire started Sunday, June 15, along SR87 north of the Four Peaks turnoff. It was reportedly started due to a vehicle crash. Northbound SR87 was closed Sunday night but had reopened by Monday morning.
