The Fountain Hills High School girls and boys track teams fared well in the Bourgade Invitational Saturday, March 22.
Some 25 teams were on hand for the competition. Fountain Hills girls tallied 92 points, good enough for a second place trophy. The boys also did well in this large field, placing fifth overall with 51 points.
Coach Todd Brecto reported that there were some great performances, which included Madi Blaes cruising to first place in the 100 hurdles (17.23) and the 300 hurdles (51.40). She was part of the second place 4x400 relay team and jumped to a fifth place finish in the triple jump.

Brooke Yost also was a double gold winner -- placing first in the 1600m (5:42) and 800m (2:30). She placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 32 feet, 5 inches and anchored the 4x400 relay team.
Hope Brecto cruised to first place in the 3200 meter run in 12:58. She anchored the fifth place 4x800 relay team.
Trista Smith skied to a first place finish in the pole vault at 10 feet. She was part of the second place 4x400 relay team.
Kelsey Schultz made it to the finals in the 300 and 100 hurdles placing sixth in both races. She was also part of the 4x400 relay team placing second.
All the girls put forth an exceptional effort on Saturday.
“We were short some key athletes who were competing in a soccer tournament in Las Vegas,” said Brecto. “If we would have had those girls in the competition, I am positive we would have claimed the first place prize for the team division.
For the boys, the 4x800 meter team of Hayden Brecto, Scott Jarriel, Peter Carillo and Josh Vaught placed second with a time of 8:54.
The pole vault brought home first, second and third place finishes. Garrett Sweetland went 12 feet; Andrew Cooper and Seth Aker both cleared 9 feet, 6 inches.
Scott Jarriel had a gutsy performance in the 1600 and 800 meter races placing third and second, respectively.
The 4x400 relay team place fourth. Relay members included Peter Carillo, Nathan Blaes, Josh Vaught and Garrett Sweetland.
North Canyon
The girls and boys participated in the North Canyon Triangular March 19.
For the girls, Madi Blaes finished first in the 100 hurdles finals with an 18.19. She took second in the 300 hurdles in 52.25. She also took third in triple jump with a 31-03.00. Fountain Hills girls Kelsey Schultz and Jessica Marrello finished second and third, respectively, in the event.
Leah Carillo finished third in the 100 meter in 13.42. She also took a second place in the 200 meter run.
Brooke Yost and Sierra Jarriel finished first and second, respectively, in the 1600 meter finals. Jarriel took first in the 800 meter, while Yost took second in that event and took another second in triple jump with a 32-07.00.
Fountain Hills girls took second place in the 4x400 meter relay, and captured first in the 4x800 meter relay.
Madeline Feyrer-Melk placed third in discus with a 79 foot, 06 throw. Jessica Stricker placed second in the high jump finals, reaching 4 feet, 08.
Leah Carillo placed second in the long jump with a 16-02.50 leap. Trista Smith pole vaulted 10 feet to take first in the event.
For the boys, Bryce Kerr finished third in the 110 hurdles in 16.72. He also took third in the triple jump with a 39-02.00. Scott Jarriel took second in the 1600 meter with a 4:49.60 and a second place in the 800 meter with 2:11.96.
Michael Ogawa finished third in the 300 hurdles in 50.65.
Fountain Hills’ boys 4x100 relay team took third, as did the 4x400 relay team.
Collin Merica placed second in the discus, throwing 99-07.00. Garrett Sweetland pole vaulted 12 feet 06.00 to take third place in that event. Peter Carillo threw a 33-02.75 to place third in the shot put.
The next track meet is Friday, March 28, at Peoria High School. The meet gets under way at 3:30 p.m. at Peoria High School starting at 3:30 p.m.
Brecto called the upcoming meet “a very high level meet with many of the top Division I teams in attendance.”
“I expect this level of competition will bring out our best performances thus far this year,” he said.
