In last week’s paper a writer came out against “boo-birds,” “NIMBY,” “CAVE” and “negative Nellies.” He also alluded to the intent of the town’s founder being the same as the management of the town. No way! The founder’s motive was profit. He made it and left. The people who bought here bought because they liked it the way it was/is. They didn’t buy here in hopes that it would morph into Scottsdale or Manhattan. Had they wanted that, it was available elsewhere.
The writer also spoke of the town’s “progress.” Progress has real meaning beyond being a vapid political marketing term. It is movement toward an end, a final goal. If Fountain Hills has a final “goal” in mind, where is it written? For me, it would be citizens living in peace and harmony, preserving what they liked about the town when they arrived. That in no way precludes necessary improvements to infrastructure as it becomes worn or simply outdated. One expects the town’s managers to attend to those things competently.

Those of us in opposition to the lagoon most likely oppose it for the same reasons that I do. It is not the business of the town’s managers to promote outside traffic to stress our streets and safety resources, nor to use town money to underwrite private business endeavors, nor to be a business itself. The citizens need to pay taxes to support proper management of necessary infrastructure and that’s it.
If we were not ready to pay those taxes, we would not have located here. Let’s keep the town’s focus on necessary civic infrastructure and leave DisneyLand to Disney. Having said that, if The Disney Corp. wants to come here, fine, as long as they finance it themselves.
