Town, Fort host two nights of Fourth Events

The Town of Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell Casino are hosting free Fourth of July events this week.

Because of dry conditions, high temperatures and potentially brisk breezes, the Town of Fountain Hills Fire Department is taking extra safety precautions for tomorrow’s Fourth of July fireworks.

The town issued a press release that the fire department would place three fire trucks and station 12 firefighters in the fireworks zone during the event in Fountain Park.

“Fourth at the Fountain,” a free, family-friendly event, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, July 4.

Attendance typically ranges from 10,000 to 15,000.

The celebration will include 10 to 12 food trucks parked on Saguaro Boulevard, which will be closed to motor vehicles; a children’s play area, recorded music and a fireworks display lasting around 20 minutes.

The fireworks will be detonated over the lake, a safety technique used by the town and Tempe.

Town communications and marketing coordinator Grace Rodman-Guetter said the fire marshal will command the zone, allowing the fireworks show to begin only if the weather and wind conditions are favorable “in a responsible and calculated environment.”

“Any unfavorable wind or weather conditions will result in an immediate cancellation of the fireworks show,” she said. “We wish to convey our dedication to safety first when it comes to our events and all those in attendance.”

Tonight at Fort

Fort McDowell Casino will host the “Red, White and Boom Celebration” tonight, Wednesday, July 3.

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. A free outdoor concert featuring the Eagles tribute band, “One of These Nights,” starts at 7:30 p.m.

A fireworks display, a Fort McDowell tradition, follows. After the fireworks, the celebration continues with the Thaddeus Rose Band, performing dance hits in the Lucky 7 Saloon from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Kick off Independence Day beginning at 8 a.m. with a free commemorative Fourth of July T-shirt available at the Fortune Club until midnight (while supplies last).

Fireworks-free

A campaign aimed at individuals to turn in personal fireworks has been gaining momentum.

Pet rescue organizations report that fireworks are a tough time for animals and veterans who suffer from PTSD.

They ask people to turn in fireworks to any participating fire station, including Fountain Hills.

For those turning in fireworks, their names will be entered into a drawing to win a 49-inch flat screen television.
