Town offers summer sports

It’s once again time for Fountain Hills residents to get up, get out and get active as Community Services announces the latest batch of sports and activities for locals to dive into.

Senior softball

Drop-in senior softball is being offered at Golden Eagle Park on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

If you are 50 years or older and interested in playing senior softball but don’t have a team, stop by Golden Eagle Park on Tuesday mornings beginning at 8:15 a.m. for batting practice.

There are also drop-in games on Thursday morning, which offers a great opportunity to meet other players and potentially be recruited to a team that plays on Wednesday mornings.

Jr. golf clinics

The Town of Fountain Hills is working with the Jim McLean Golf School at SunRidge Canyon to offer lessons for kids between the ages of 5 and 17. Students will learn the rules, skills and techniques of golf, and SunRidge will provide clubs and balls during the lessons.

Brian Roberts will be the new junior golf instructor for these lessons. He was the US-KIDS local tour director and has his class A-PGA membership from ASU.

Roberts said he looks forward to helping the next generation of golfers achieve their goals, develop their passion and have fun while doing it.

The registration deadline is the Thursday before the start of a lesson and cost is $55 per student. Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from Aug. 19-28, from 4 to 5 p.m.

Open gym

An open gym will be held for all ages looking to hang out with friends, play basketball, dodgeball, play on the playground or just enjoy some free play at the Fountain Hills Middle School.

This is an unstructured play time program and kids can bring their own balls for activities. Parents are welcome to stay and take part.

Open gym is not a licensed daycare facility. Parents can drop-in on the day of the event. Cost to participate is $5, and the event will be held on Friday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m.
