Town working toward skate park lighting

The Town Council has approved a resolution giving staff authority to submit a grant for lighting at the Skate Park in Desert Vista Park.

The grant would be submitted to the Arizona Tourism and Sports Authority for consideration and would require a $23,800 contribution from the town.

Acting Community Services Director Rachael Goodwin said lights were removed from the original park design for budget purposes. However, she said the skate ramps are a popular facility in the community, but are limited to daylight use, impacting summertime activity.

The addition of lights would significantly extend the potential use of the park and also be consistent with the lights at the dog park and soccer field lighting at Desert Vista.

Goodwin said the estimated total for the project would be $70,000 and the town is asking for $46,200 in grant funding, leaving the balance of $23,800, or one third of the cost.

The council voted 7-0 to approve the grant application going forward. Goodwin said the award should be announced in the fall.
