The Fountain Hills High School track team got its season started with an easy, low-key first meet.

FHHS had its first meet on Feb. 27 at Saguaro High School where the Falcons had 18 podium finishers.

The track squad has two meets coming up this week. The first is today, March 6, at Pinnacle High School. This Saturday, March 9, the Falcons have their first invitational, the Small School Invite, at Mesa Community College.

Head coach Nick Goodman and his team treated the Feb. 27 meet as a chance for the Falcons to prepare for this Saturday’s invitational.

“Last Wednesday’s meet was our first for the year,” Goodman said. “And that, combined with the meet director wanting to do strictly indoor events (even though it was an outdoor meet), we were not going into this meet with high expectations except to give our young team some non-pressured experience before our first invitational on March 9.”

Goodman said he is pleased with how the athletes preformed and was glad no one was overwhelmed by the hectic environment of a track meet.

“Overall the FHHS athletes did well,” Goodman said. “For many of them this was their first ever track and field meet. The logistics of a meet can be overwhelming with the combination of multiple teams and multiple events. All of the FHHS athletes were checked in on time and performed well.”

The girls had five first place finishes. Madison George took first in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.52 and took first in pole vaulting at 3.65 meters.

Stephanie Lies placed first in the shot put event with a 8.35-meter throw. Lauren Schultz took first in the discus event with a throw of 28.57 meters and Holly Garrett took first in the long jump with 3.48 meters.

Second place honors for the girls included Stephanie Lies again with a 26.61-meter discus throw and Holly Garrett for pole vaulting 2.13 meters.

Third place honors went to two of the girls including Annika Clark in the 600 meter run with a time of 2:09.79 and in shot put was Lauren Schultz with a throw of 7.40 meters.

On the boys’ side, four finished in first place. Miles Collier finished the 60 meter hurdles in 10.14 seconds. Brant Ralph threw the discus for 44.24 meters. Ahmed Momoh jumped 1.52 meters in the high jump and 5.79 meters in the long jump.

Three boys earned second place honors including Boden Davidson, who finished the 300 meter dash in 39.87 seconds and jumped 5.74 meters in the long jump. Dylan Koveikis also pole vaulted 2.43 meters for second.

Like the girls, two boys earned third place honors including Ahmed Momoh for running the 60 meter dash in 7.53 seconds and Porter Sweet for a 5.20-meter long jump.
