After a solid week of practice, the high school track team took part in the Scottsdale Distance Classic over the weekend, a team-favorite event, according to head coach Todd Brecto.
“The only events at this track meet are the 4x800 relay, the 800m run, the 1600m run and the 3200m run,” Brecto said.
“The best in the state from all divisions come to participate in this unique venue.”

Brecto said that the big story of the night for the Fountain Hills squad occurred during the girls’ 1600m event.
“Sierra Jarriel broke the school record,” Brecto said.
“[She ran] 5:13. That is impressive.”
Jarriel almost came away with a second school record on the night in the 800m run, crossing the finish line at 2:21, less than a second away from securing the record.
“Still, not a bad evening for the junior super track star,” Brecto added.
Brecto said that the Falcons are so strong in the 800m run for the girls, that the team was able to put together two relay squads.
The team of Madi Blaes, Leah Carillo, Courtney Wise and Kailee Martin finished sixth on the night at 10:54, with Kelsey Schultz, Alaina Olmstead, Alexandra Coons and Danica Kerr taking eighth at 11:04.
Jarriel’s 800 time placed her second overall, with Alexandra Coons coming in at 2:42, Danica Kerr crossing at 2:47 and Erika Yost finishing at 2:50.
Jarriel’s mile run was also good enough for second overall. Hope Brecto came in at 5:57, with Kailee Martin at 6:17 and Frieda Schimag at 7:12.
In the two mile, Hope Brecto ran well for the Falcons, crossing at 12:57.
Over to the boys, a 4x800 relay team of Matt Seiwert, Hayden Brecto, Nathan Blaes and David Grifo took fifth place overall at 8:57.
“In the 800, Matt Seiwert, Cameron Stewart, Hayden Brecto and Jordan Klein all had good performances,” Brecto added.
“And Matt Seiwert, Jordan Smout, Jordan Klein and Jason Sahr all had great results in the 1600.”
The Falcons take part in two meets this week, beginning with a trip to Horizon Honors High School this afternoon, April 8, at 3:45 p.m. Tomorrow afternoon, the Falcons will take part in the Sun Angel Classic beginning at 10 a.m.
The action will continue next Monday, April 13, as the Falcons gear up to host their one and only local competition of the season, set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
“Come on out and support our local track team,” Brecto said.
“If you are interested in volunteering to help at the meet, please call [me] at 221-9316.”
