Track sprints into spring break

Both the boys and girl Fountain Hills High School track team competed in a meet and invitational this past week.

On March 6, the Falcons competed against Desert Mountain and Pinnacle in a regular season meet.

Then, on March 9, FHHS competed in the Small School Invitational and, as a school, placed 25 out of the 45 teams competing.

The Falcon tracksters will have the week of spring break off and will return to compete in the Valley Christian School Track Early Qualifier on March 20.

Pinnacle

Head coach Nick Goodman knew going into the Pinnacle meet that Fountain Hills would be the significantly smaller school of the three competing that day.

“Our numbers were very few compared to the other schools, which was intimidating to our small and younger team,” Goodman said. “Although we lacked quantity, our quality marks and times proved to be successful.”

Goodman said he believes that the Wednesday meet proved to be the perfect warm-up for the Falcons going into the first 45-school invitational that Saturday.

Invitational

Easily the highlight of the day for the Falcons was the girls’ team which, despite only having three competitors, placed six out of 45 schools.

“This was a result of Madison George and Stephanie Lies taking first overall in the pole vault and javelin, respectively, both setting meet records,” Goodman said. “Lauren Shultz also contributed to the girls team’s success by her high marks in the discus and shot putt.”

For the boys, Goodman said that many personal records were made, giving a lot of the young trackster a confidence boost.

“Competing against 44 other schools during a meet that lasted from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. can be overwhelming,” Goodman said. “However, the Fountain Hills boys proved their physical preparation and mental toughness by hitting great times and marks in their respective events.”

Goodman said he is confident that, after this great start, many will qualify for state in May.
