It was a busy weekend for the high school track team as the Falcons took part in the Division III state tournament.

The local squad took 19 athletes to the event with the girls taking seventh out of 36 teams overall and the boys finishing 31st out of 34th.

Several Falcons managed to place at the event, though head coach Chris Davis said that freshman Sierra Jarriel and sophomore Brooke Yost were the big standouts.

“Those two did especially well,” said head coach Chris Davis.

“They both did a great job in their individual events and earned a lot of points for the team.”

Overall, Davis said that it was an extremely hot meet at state this year, but the rising temperature did not seem to have any impact on local athletes, as many continued to improve on their personal bests.

“It was a good meet,” Davis added.

“There were a couple of events I wish we would have done better in, but that’s okay. Overall we did very well.”

Davis said the Falcons were “right there in the mix,” something he attributes to his team’s dedication this season, as well as that of his fellow coaches.

“I’d like to thank the coaching staff for their dedication to insuring we were well represented at state,” Davis said.

“They did a great job preparing everyone. We’re a young team, so I think we had an outstanding performance this year. Everyone really stayed focused on their events.”

Fountain Hills’ trip through state began on Friday afternoon. Leah Carillo was the first Falcon to compete, taking fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 16’8”.

Tyler Forrest took part in shot put at state but was unable to earn a mark during competition.

The girls 4x800 relay team, made up of Brooke Yost, Leah Carillo, Madi Blaes and Sierra Jarriel, took second at state with their time of 9:51, just over a second behind first place and still fast enough to earn a new school record.

Over to the men’s 1600 and Scott Jarriel ran his best laps of the season, taking 22nd place with his time of 4:38.

The girls’ 4x100 relay team of Brooke Yost, Izzy Jelacic, Trista Smith and Leah Carillo nabbed 13th with their combined time of 52.44.

Jelacic also did well in the 400m run, taking 18th at 64.49.

Bryce Kerr’s 300m hurdle run of 42.08 was his best of the year, taking eighth place in the prelims on Friday. He went on to finish ninth overall. He also competed in the 110 hurdles, taking 16th at 16.51.

Madi Blaes ran the 300m hurdles for the girls at 51.63, earning 19th place. Sierra Jarriel re-broke the school record in the 3200 on Friday, moving her mark down to 11:32 and taking second place overall.

The girls’ 4x400 relay team, made up of Jelacic, Carillo, Smith and Yost, took 10th at 4:17 while the boys’ 4x400 team, made up of Jon Miller, Cameron Glass, Joe Ahman and Bryce Kerr, took 17th at 3:39.

Garret Sweetland also competed in the pole vault with Trista Smith taking part in the high jump.

Back in action on Saturday, it was Trista Smith’s turn to tackle the pole vault, leaping her personal best for the season at 10’ and earning seventh place overall.

Over to the girls’ triple jump and Brooke Yost got the party started with an eighth place leap of 32’11.5”, good enough to set a new school record. Madi Blaes jumped 31’8” to take 14th with Madeline Feyrer-Melk taking 16th at 31’ flat.

The boys 4x800 team, made up of Garrett Sweetland, Scott Jarriel, Hayden Brecto and Cameron Glass took eighth place overall at 8:34 while Tyler Forrest managed to throw 115’ in discus to place 23rd.

Sierra Jarriel finished up the state event for the Falcons with two more races on Saturday, taking third place in the mile at 5:18 and third place in the 800m run at 2:22.
