Track team prepares for weekend state meet

The Falcon track team wrapped up the 2015 regular season with a two-day event hosted out of Horizon High School on April 27 and April 29.

It was a big day for the Fountain Hills team and served as a nice warm-up for the upcoming state competition, set to take place at Mesa Community College on Friday and Saturday, May 8-9.

Loads of Falcons have qualified for various events, with athletes able to compete in a maximum of four.

The Falcon track team wrapped up the 2015 regular season with a two-day event hosted out of Horizon High School on April 27 and April 29.

It was a big day for the Fountain Hills team and served as a nice warm-up for the upcoming state competition, set to take place at Mesa Community College on Friday and Saturday, May 8-9.

Loads of Falcons have qualified for various events, with athletes able to compete in a maximum of four.

Qualifying girls include Brooke Yost, Erika Yost, Leah Carillo, Alaina Olmstead, Kelsey Schultz, Madi Blaes, Hope Brecto, Sierra Jarriel, Madison Feyrer-Melk, Madeline Feyrer-Melk, Alexandra Coons, Linden Howell, Danica Kerr and Courtney Wise.

Boys qualifying for state include Bryce Kerr, Hayden Brecto, Nathan Blaes, David Grifo, Andrew Cooper, Seth Aker, Matt Seiwert, Matt Chalmers, Michael Ogawa, Cameron Stewart and Jordan Smout.

Horizon

Once again proving that the Falcons are capable of flying higher and higher, head coach Todd Brecto made note of the fact that many athletes once again set some personal records, as well as a new school record, at the final meet of the regular season hosted out of Horizon High School.

As for that school record, Sierra Jarriel bested the school’s best time in the two mile, coming in at 11:27.

Three guys did very well in the 100m dash, including Mathew Chalmers crossing the finish line at 11.87, David Grifo crossing at 11.96 and Cameron Stewart crossing at 11.99.

“These three speedsters, along with Bryce Kerr, were part of the 4x100 relay team,” Brecto continued.

“They [also] posted their fastest time of the year at 44.49.”

Over to the boys 110m hurdles and both Bryce Kerr and Michael Ogawa had solid times at 15.19 and 16.35, respectively. They also did well in the 300m hurdles with respective times of 40.65 and 44.41.

Andrew Cooper took third in the pole vault at 12’. Nathan Blaes finished the 400m run at 52.91, with Hayden Brecto and Cameron Stewart both finishing the 800m run at 2:08.

The 4x400 team also ran its fastest time of the year at 3:33, comprised of Hayden Brecto, Nathan Blaes, Bryce Kerr and Cameron Stewart.

In the 200m dash, Mathew Chalmers finished at 24.41 with David Grifo crossing at 23.95.

Hayden Brecto led the long-jumpers at 19’1”, with Cameron Steward clearing 5’6” in the high jump. Daniel Levato managed 35’ in the triple jump.

All three mile runners for the boys earned personal records, including Matt Seiwert at 4:43, Jordan Smout at 5:07 and Cody Walter at 5:20.

Kamren Vogel led the boys in the shot, throwing 37’5.5”, as well as the disc, launching for 88’2”.

Erika Yost put up her fastest 100 and 200 times at the meet, going 13.47 and 27.70 respectively.

In the 400m dash, Leah Carillo went 65.51 closely followed by Brooke Yost at 66.03 and Alaina Olmstead at 66.53.

Danica Kerr led the 800m run at 2:37, with Alexandra Coons coming in at 2:39, Courtney Wise at 2:40 and Hope Brecto at 2:44.

Frieda Schirmag went 7:18 in the mile, with Sierra Jarriel and Hope Brecto earning their best runs of the year in the two mile at 11:27 and 12:40, respectively.

Brecto called Kelsey Schultz a “dominant force” in the hurdles, going 17.48 in the 100m event and 46.75 in the 300m event.

The 4x100 team of Brooke Yost, Erica Yost, Alaina Olmstead and Leah Carillo ran their fastest time at 52.27, with Madison Feyrer-Melk leading the way in the shot at 29’3” and the disc at 93’.

Linden Howell and Alexandra Coons both topped 7’ in the pole vault, while Amara Feyrer-Melk had her best long jump of the season at 15’8”.

Over to the triple jump, Madi Blaes wrapped things up at 32’10”.
