Trust seems to be the magic stumbling block to the passage of the town’s property tax initiative. My question is how could so many of us have voted people that we didn’t trust into office; people that we didn’t trust to make decisions for our town?

I was told when I ran for mayor, and was elected twice, to be prepared, as every decision and/or vote I made was going to upset at least half of the citizens at any given time. I also was told that no matter what the subject was, it takes a minimum of four council members’ votes to pass. Rarely do you have a 7-0 vote, or at least very few.

All of the present council members and mayor have varying levels of expertise on most any given subject before them. They have rules and laws that must be abided by, which most citizens are not aware of and probably don’t completely understand; let alone agree with. Each council member must then form his/her own opinion and vote when a subject comes before the group. The decision that they make might not be popular with the citizens – I know, I’ve been there – but they have to do what they feel best regarding the matter at the time.

Surely everyone on the present council must have some trustworthiness. If you cannot find that trust, then my thought would be to grab the forms, gather the signatures and take a run at a seat on the council.

However, I want to warn you: If you win, you will probably find yourself “untrustworthy” in the future.

Please vote yes to save our town on May 15.
