The first week of play against region opponents went extremely well for the Fountain Hills High School softball team.

The Lady Falcons’ first game last week was against Gilbert Christian on March 26. FHHS won the game 21-13.

Fountain Hills’ next game was on March 28 against Coronado. The Falcons earned a blowout over their Scottsdale opponent with a 17-2 win.

FHHS has two games this week. The first was yesterday, April 2, against Arizona College Prep.

The Lady Falcons’ next game is tomorrow, April 4, against American leadership Academy Gilbert. The game will be at home with a start time of 4 p.m.

Gilbert Christian

While head coach Randy Bragg thought the Lady Falcons could have played a little better in their game against Gilbert Christian, he was proud of their ability to fight back after losing the lead.

“We were up 9-3 going into the fifth and Sophia was tired from the weekend, so we brought in Nicolette Barker [to pitch],” Bragg said. “She shut it down but they (Gilbert) had a 10-9 lead on us going into the bottom of the fifth.”

The Lady Falcons, determined not to give up, put 10 runs on the scoreboard and that sealed the win.

One of the big hitters for FHHS was Gabbi Coughlin who was 4-5 with four RBI.

Taylor Pace only went 1-3 but a well-placed bunt got her three RBI.

“Taylor and Gianna both put down critical bunts in the bottom of the fifth,” Bragg said. “They were struggling a little bit at the plate with the pitcher, so I decide to have them bunt and they put down beautiful bunts that were huge for us.”

Coronado

Bragg started Barker on the mound in the game against Coronado for the first time this season.

“The coaches wanted to give Nicolette an opportunity to start a game and she didn’t disappoint,” Bragg said. “She did a fantastic job, pitching five innings with five strikeouts, no hits and just one run.”

While Coronado struggled to make something happen at the plate the Lady Falcons had no issues with players like Kalista Johnson going 2-3, Sydney Loyet going 2-4 and Gabbi Coughlin stealing a base as well as throwing out a steal attempt.

Bragg is now looking ahead to this week’s matches so he can get a solid look at where FHHS stands in the region.

“The goal is to get that banner,” Bragg said.
