Well, it’s April and voters are still waiting to see if Cecil Yates, mayoral candidate, respects them enough to resign his council seat by the end of the month so that voters will decide on his replacement on the council. Or will he wait until the end of May, when he has to resign by law, at which time the mayor and council will decide on his replacement?

We aren't talking a few months; we are talking two years that a non-elected person would be on the council. If Mr. Yates doesn’t resign by the end of this month, he is thumbing his nose at you, the voter.

Mr. Yates wasn’t even halfway into this term when he announced that he was running for mayor. Why did he run for a council seat if he didn’t intend to fulfil that commitment? Abandoning his council seat is questionable enough, but to not allow voters to elect a new council member to replace him is the height of hypocrisy.

The most common argument that is given for not voting for the property tax is that voters don’t trust the council with the money. Not respecting voters enough to let us elect his replacement on the council is a huge red flag that Mr. Yates can’t be trusted in other ways regarding what voters want.

Mr. Yates, let us vote. Resign by the end of the month.
