Unattractive

I cannot believe that the town has allowed a memorial to two living people who have done nothing for the town of any greatness that I am aware of except contribute a statue. The Fred and Ginger statue at the Fountain is not only unattractive but also inappropriate for the Fountain area.

I appreciate the art we have in Fountain Hills. Every piece is beautiful. But this particular piece is not beautiful. My opinion, which I am sure, is not shared by many. However, what does it take to have a statue of myself or my dog put up with a lengthy explanation saying how old we are, how we met, etc.? Just have it made and pay for it? I think this is shameful.

If we begin to erect art honoring everyone who wants their life immortalized and is willing to pay for it, that takes away from the importance of the art erected to the great people who have contributed and art that represents real life (children, a boy on a bike with a dog, etc.).

I am sure that Walter and Betty have had a good life, but does that necessitate commemorating them forever publicly? What is wrong with the Greening of Downtown bronze leaves on the columns, or planting a tree or erecting a bench?

I am for the first time truly disappointed with our Fountain Hills Cultural and Civic Association’s Public Art Committee and Town Council for accepting and allowing this foolishness.

I do agree with the tribute given to the FHCCA in last week’s paper, but Fred and Ginger aka Walter and Betty is not one of their best.
