It’s a few hours before lunch and Gene Metcalfe is outside his home, watering his rosemary bush that is recovering from a skirmish between a coyote and a pack rat that he watched from inside his art studio.
At 100 years of age, Metcalfe spends hours sketching and painting wildlife, architecture, landscape and people of his past as an activity that keeps his mind limber and his hands steady.
Cactus, Cyprus, Agave and other native Arizona foliage surround him in his backyard that overlooks the Town of Fountain Hills.
