Volleyball claims region and records

It was another successful week for the high school volleyball squad as the Falcons added another three wins to their season total, moving to 37-5 on the year. As an added bonus, this past week’s victories clinched the Metro Region championship for the local squad, as well as set a new school record for most wins in a single season.

Sweeping teams from Valley Christian, ASU Prep and Payson, the local ladies are currently in the middle of their final week of regular play. Hosting Casteel Tuesday evening, Oct. 24, the team will hit the road to Yuma Catholic this Thursday, Oct. 26, for a 6 p.m. showdown.

26, for a 6 p.m. showdown.

Valley Christian

Valley Christian put up a good fight against the Falcons, but the local ladies proved too much for the Crusaders to handle, earning wins of 25-19, 25-10, 25-20.

“The week started off with a fantastic win against Valley Christian, who is one of the top five teams in our division, in my opinion,” said head coach Peter McGloin. “We really played Falcon volleyball in this one; played hard, focused, aggressive and with a lot of positive emotion.”

Still, the Falcons weren’t allowed to simply walk away with a win while squaring off an opponent as tough as Valley Christian.

“Valley Christian played great defense and we had some of the longest rallies of the season,” McGloin continued. “But we were in control of tempo most of the time and won rather convincingly.”

As the season wears on, McGloin said he’s happy to see the local ladies continue to strengthen as a team.

“I was really proud of the team in this match for picking each other up after mistakes and hitting the right shots while not letting errors change the way we want to play,” he said. “The team continued to show a lot of growth in this one.”

ASU Prep

Next up was a match versus the ASU Prep Sun Devils, where the Falcons made quick work of their opponents. The local ladies won three straight matches in rapid succession by scores of 25-7, 25-9, 25-7.

Payson

The third match on the week was another tough one, this time on the road with a competition against the Payson Longhorns.

The Falcons edged past their hosts by a score of 28-26 in game one and dominated them with a final score of 25-14 in game two. The third game was another close competition with the local ladies staying just ahead of Payson and earning another victory at 25-22.

Despite the final outcome, McGloin said the Falcons were not as intense and sharp as they should have been.

“It was a win against a pretty good team, so I’m happy with that, but we saw some sloppiness that was around too much in the early part of the season,” McGloin continued. “I’m hoping the team wil recognize this and we can use it as a reminder of what needs to be done to paly to our potential.”

A special highlight from this match came from KC McMahon, breaking her own school record for the most kills made in a single season.
