Voluntary Travel ID now available in AZ

If you’re looking to do some air travel in the coming years, then you’re going to need to pick up a new form of identification. And starting this month, you can do exactly that.

The Arizona Voluntary Travel ID, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation, is now available as both a driver license and identification card.

“The Voluntary Travel ID will serve as valid identification to pass through airport security to board commercial aircraft, as well as access restricted areas in federal facilities, nuclear power plants and military facilities,” according to a statement from AZDOT.

This new credential complies with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005 and, as its name suggests, acquiring one is currently voluntary.

But don’t worry about being left out of travel plans just yet, as AZDOT explains there’s no need to rush out and grab your new ID right this minute.

Your current Arizona credentials will still be sufficient through Oct. 1, 2020, which means you won’t be stopped from boarding a plane anytime soon simply because you do not have the new form of identification.

If you want to get ahead of the game, however, the new credentials are finally available in Arizona starting this month.

The cost of the Voluntary Travel ID is $25 and can be requested in person at the Department of Transportation. If you go that route, you can also speed up the process by submitting your application online before arriving. To do that, visit azdot.gov.

Otherwise, just like with your standard driver license, you can request a Voluntary Travel ID at any authorized third party driver license provider.

Finally, you could set up an appointment at select Motor Vehicle Departments, but appointments must be set up at servicearizona.com.

For the time being, nobody is required to obtain a Voluntary Travel ID. They are, however, now available and will be required for air travel starting in late 2020.
