OPINION — Are we great yet? I’d answer, “Definitely not!”
In fact, in my 86 years of life, I’ve never known my country or my town to be in such dire straits. In both places we’ve elevated people to high office whose most basic instincts seem to be to divide us by political party; demean, dehumanize, and scapegoat those who differ from us in religion, lifestyle, gender identity, skin color or wealth. Both take credit for the accomplishments of others and both appear to have invited into our government those who would like to see Evangelical Christian Nationalism take hold.
Did we totally forget our Constitution that guarantees freedom of and from religion? It protects the rights of all people to worship as they wish or not at all. It clearly separates religion from government to protect them both. Yet Trump now has a Faith Office in the White House and some locally have pushed for naming our Community Center after Charlie Kirk.
