The Southern Maine Office on Aging celebrated the conclusion of his project to call awareness to more than 8 million seniors and raise funds for Meals-on-Wheels.
Cihiwsky wrote on his Facebook page “it’s time to return home now. My wife Sharon and I will be traveling at 20 times the speed of walk as we rocket back to Colorado in our automobile.
“Thanks everyone for your support and kind words of encouragement over the past seven months. Signing off.”
Cihiwsky began his seven-month trek March 4 in San Diego, pushing a three-wheel modified cart weighing about 100 pounds filled with camping supplies, water and sundries.
He reached Fountain Hills on day 29, April 1, and stayed at the Comfort Inn before continuing north to Payson.
The retired engineer said walking across country had been a lifetime objective.
A friend convinced him to step with a purpose. He brought awareness to senior needs, particularly Meals on Wheels in San Diego, a national organization and network dedicated to end senior hunger through community-based nutrition programs.
He will receive the Meals on Wheels American Volunteer Award for his endeavor.
