Posted

Walter Raymond Nommay, 78, formerly of Fort Wayne, Ind. passed away on Oct. 26, 2018, in Fountain Hills after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was the youngest child of the late Elsie (Girardot) and Raymond Nommay. Walt graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1957. He was no stranger to hard work and, by necessity, was a jack of all trades. He could fix anything. Walt often worked two jobs and put in long hours to support his family.

He was employed for many years at the Falstaff Brewery and at E.H. Purcell, until he learned the craft of flooring installation from his neighbor and mentor, the late Ralph Augspurger. Walt went on to start his own business, Nommay Carpet and Linoleum, with his wife, which they successfully ran together for over 30 years.

He retired to Arizona and spent time volunteering at Fountain View, the Mayo Clinic, and at a number of community events. Walt enjoyed his walks around the fountain with his friends and neighbors and especially loved traveling and going on cruises in and around the United States.

He was a member of the Fountain Hills German Club, Kiwanis Club as well as attended Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his three children, John (Alison), Tina (Jim), Katrina (Matt); his sister, Janet Fisher and was “Dedo” to his grandchildren, Susan, James, Anastasia, Nikos, Lukas and Amelia. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 49 years, Milka; and his sister, Joanne Martony.

Walt never met a stranger. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends in Fort Wayne and Fountain Hills. His family extends its thanks to his wonderful caregivers at Hospice of the Valley, with a special thanks to his companion, Ruby J. Pearson and her extended family for all their love and support.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. The family asks that in honor of Walt, you perform a random act of kindness. Memorial Services will be planned at a later date.
