Weather news from 2014

The summer monsoon of 2014 will be one to remember for Fountain Hills with a late September storm quite literally nearly washing the Oktoberfest celebration into Fountain Lake.

And that was just a minor taste of the wet weather. The four months between July and October averaged roughly two inches of rain per month in Fountain Hills, well above normal.

While October is not officially a monsoon month, this year it added an additional quarter inch to the totals. The first monsoon month, June (15 official start), was dry.

As typical, some of the summer storms came with wind gusts strong enough to uproot trees and in several cases deposit them on the tops of cars and car ports.

Storm drains could not handle runoff and streets flooded and wash crossings were closed.

Landscape crews were kept busy between storms cleaning up cutting and trimming up downed trees and limbs. In a couple of instances trees came down on parked vehicles.

Several of the storms this season were fed by weakening tropical storms that blew in from the Pacific.

The fire station on Palisades Boulevard received nearly five inches (4.92) inches of rain in September.

As the year winds down it seems the El Nino conditions have taken hold. While November was dry, there were 2.65 inches of rain recorded at Fountain Park during December.
