What's frightening

Last week a letter made the statement “what a revolting development this is.” It was in reference to a phone call President Elect Trump took from the President of Taiwan, congratulating him on his election.

It appears the writer of this letter does not have a clue of our country’s relationship with Taiwan, or knows very little of our history with them. Taiwan and the USA have maintained unofficial relations since 1979.

We have relations with the people of Taiwan with the Taiwan Relation Act, signed into law by President Carter, a Democrat.

In 1996 we had the Taiwan Strait Crisis. China set off missiles and live ammunition exercises in the Straits. President Clinton, a Democrat, responded by staging the biggest display of American military might in assist since the Vietnam War.

In 1996 he sent two aircraft carrier battle groups into the Taiwan straits. This forced the Chinese leadership to acknowledge its inability to stop the United States forces from coming to Taiwan’s assistance.

On Dec. 16, 2015, the Obama administration announced a deal to sell $1.83 billion worth of arms to the Armed Forces of Taiwan. In 2014 Congress passed the Taiwan Relations Act affirmation. We sold two Navy frigates, anti-tank missiles, assault amphibious vehicles and Stinger missiles. I wonder are all of the above, the protocol and decade’s old U.S. policies putting our tenuous relationship with China at risk?

Or is it that phone call Trump took from a president of a multiparty democratic regime headed by an elected president, and five branches of government? President Trump is well prepared to send a message to the countries that wish to suppress freedom and human rights. I spent a month in China in 1997, it’s not the country it used to be. Now it’s all about the money!
