Bob Kuwik gave an update on the condition of his wife, the victim of a recent javelina attack, during the open call to the public at the May 5 Town Council Meeting.
According to Kuwik, the incident occurred on April 30, when his wife was walking their two dogs. Six javelina ran from a nearby wash and attacked the woman, who fell to the ground before being bitten several times. One of the dogs was also attacked, while the other escaped unharmed.
According to a statement from the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the javelina were being fed by at least two neighbors, which may have been cause for this unusual behavior.

Woman attacked by javelinas

All six javelina were “lethally removed,” according to the report, and are being checked for rabies. The victim and one of her dogs underwent surgery following the attack and are being treated for rabies as a precaution until results come back.
Kuwik and a neighbor witnessed the incident and fought off the javelina before calling for emergency assistance.
During his comments at the May 5 meeting, Kuwik said his wife was home recovering before going on to give praise to the neighbor who assisted in the attack, MCSO and town EMTs. Kuwik also stated the four Fish and Game officers who investigated the incident were “spectacular.”
On the other side of the spectrum, Kuwik said that wash management would be concluding soon due to fiscal and time constraints. Kuwik also indicated that wash maintenance was reportedly going on for the past seven months, though he and his neighbors have seen little activity in the area.
Kuwik asked that the Town expedite the wash project, as it does not appear the work will reach the area of his neighborhood before wrapping up for the summer. He also stated that there is work to be done in educating residents about the dangers of feeding local wildlife, asking that the Council use this opportunity to reinstitute the Public Safety Committee.
Mayor Linda Kavanagh stated that Kuwik’s concerns will be looked into and Town Manager Grady Miller said that a report on the wash maintenance project will be provided at the next meeting.
