Work together

Mayor Kavanagh, I am a Sanitary District board member and I don’t think that your recent social media comments about the district were helpful. I would prefer to see the town and the district work together for the good of our residents. You stated that “the Sanitary [District] started sending the golf courses the reclaimed water first that caused stagnation in our lake that after a few years smelled horribly.” That is misleading.

The district gives the town the same Class A+ effluent that we sell to the golf courses. We give that same water to the town for free. Upon receiving our effluent, the town, not the district, is responsible for water quality management in the lake. Water quality degrades when exposed to the environment.

At one time, we used the lake as a central distribution point for both the town and the golf courses. With the addition of our Advanced Water Treatment Facility, distribution was changed so that our customers received separate feeds. But the golf courses do not get their water “first,” as you stated. It is simultaneously distributed.

The original delivery scheme had also put the district into a position of potential legal liability. Our fiducial responsibility to our rate-payers requires us to avoid any unnecessary potential legal jeopardy.

I applaud the town’s recent efforts to improve the quality of the water in Fountain Lake. The district has provided the town with various suggestions for improving the lake water. We have offered help and continue those efforts to this day with our new district manager. Let’s forge constructive links to work together on issues of mutual concern. May I respectfully suggest that you call a meeting with our chairman, Bob Thomson, to begin a discussion on how we might better work together?
