Working to locate invasive plant species on Fountain Hills preserve lands

Volunteers mapping sites where problem vegetation is found

Last summer’s monsoon is best described as a “non-soon” with very little precipitation.

In the five months since August there has been virtually no measurable rain in the Phoenix area. Brittlebush, characterized by bright yellow flowers covering the hillsides should be thriving and about to bloom this time of year. However, they are currently leafless plants dried to their mid-summer dormancy.

Weak, drought stricken desert plants tend to allow their environment to be overrun with heartier non-invasive plant species that are at the very least a significant fire hazard.
