The high school wrestling squad had a very successful first home meet of the season, going 4-0 at the five-team event hosted out of the local high school on Tuesday evening, Dec. 16.

This match wrapped up the 2014 portion of the season for the high school grapplers, with the Falcons not set to return to the mat until Friday and Saturday, Jan. 2-3.

At that time, the Falcons will head to Prescott to compete out of Tim’s Toyota Center for a tournament drawing teams from all over the state.

As for the undefeated home performance, Salzman said that the evening’s events were even better thanks to a nice turnout from the hometown crowd.

“It was great seeing all the wrestling fans coming out and supporting us,” Salzman said.

“The boys put on a good showing in front of the home crowd. It was a great way to start out our two-week break from competition before getting into a very busy January.”

The Falcons began the home competition with a match against Snowflake, going on to win 48-28.

According to Salzman, this was a great way for the Falcons to come out of the gate and build momentum for the rest of their upcoming matches.

“We had three pins in a row with our lightweights that really set the tone of the dual, including Tony Boulanger, Wesley Smout and Kyle Clark,” Salzman said.

“We struggled with their tougher guys in the middle weights, then we went five in a row to finish it out with wins from Robbie Hugo, Josh Vaught, Jordan Smout, Chris Hernandez and Parker Kaufman.

“Snowflake is always a tough team, so this was a big win for us.”

The second match of the evening was a bit lopsided as the Falcons took on a small squad from San Carlos, winning all three matches.

“Then we wrestled Canyon State Academy and won 44-25,” Salzman continued.

“We had big wins coming from Kaelan Loving, Jack Reilly, Josh Vaught, Max Jordan and Parker Kauffman.”

Despite the long night of matches, the Falcons were showing no signs of fatigue, going into their match against American Leadership Academy and utterly dominating.

Salzman said that ALA is a newer school with an up and coming program, but the Falcons managed to top these opponents by a final score of 61-18.

Big wins came from Tony Boulanger, Wesley Smout, Daniel Butler, Kaelan Loving, Nico Smout, Robbie Hugo, Brett Smaga, Nathan Blaes and Chris Hernandez.
