Arizona’s fastest-growing careers: Health care, tech and manufacturing

Posted

Arizona’s economy is changing fast — and so is its job market.

Driven by steady population growth, an aging population and billions of dollars in new business investment, the state is seeing surging demand for workers in health care, technology, advanced manufacturing and logistics.

From hospitals and data centers to semiconductor plants and distribution hubs, employers across Arizona are hiring for roles that are expected to remain in demand for years to come.

While opportunities are growing statewide, the strongest job growth is centered around the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas, where major employers continue to expand operations, according to the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

Healthcare continues to lead the way

Health care remains Arizona’s fastest-growing employment sector, largely because more residents are moving to the state and living longer.

One of the most in-demand careers is nurse practitioner, with employment expected to grow by more than 70% over the next decade. As health care systems work to meet rising patient demand, nurse practitioners are playing an increasingly important role in providing both primary and specialized care.

Other health care careers are also on the rise.

Demand for physical therapist assistants is projected to climb nearly 40% as rehabilitation services expand. Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants are expected to see growth of more than 23%, helping patients recover from injuries, illnesses and mobility challenges, according to the office of economic opportunity.

Behind the scenes, health care organizations are also looking for more leaders. Medical and health services managers, who oversee hospitals, clinics and healthcare operations, are among the state’s fastest-growing professions and earn a median annual salary of nearly $118,000.

Arizona’s tech industry gaining momentum

Arizona is no longer just attracting technology companies — it’s becoming a major technology hub in its own right.

The growth of data centers, cybersecurity firms and artificial intelligence initiatives is creating strong demand for skilled technology professionals.

Information security analysts are expected to see employment grow by nearly 29% as businesses invest more heavily in protecting their systems and data from cyber threats, according to the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

At the same time, demand for computer and information research scientists is projected to increase by about 26%, reflecting growing interest in artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced computing. Industry experts increasingly view Phoenix and Tucson as emerging centers for innovation and digital infrastructure, according to state data.

Semiconductor investments reshaping manufacturing

Few industries have transformed Arizona’s economy as dramatically as advanced manufacturing.

Massive investments in semiconductor production have created thousands of jobs and generated demand for a range of skilled workers. As new manufacturing facilities continue to expand, employers are looking for industrial technicians, automation specialists, machinists and solar installers to help keep operations running.

The manufacturing boom is also fueling demand for highly skilled engineers. Aerospace and defense engineers remain especially sought after as Arizona continues to strengthen its role in advanced manufacturing and defense technology.

Logistics keeps Arizona moving

Arizona’s location makes it a natural crossroads for commerce, and that advantage continues to fuel job growth.

As distribution networks and e-commerce operations expand across the Southwest, employers are hiring more truck drivers to move goods throughout the region. Some projections show employment in the field growing by as much as 25%.

Companies are also investing in talent that can make supply chains more efficient. Operations research analysts, who use data and predictive modeling to improve logistics and business performance, are expected to see employment grow by about 21%. The role offers a median annual salary of roughly $91,000.

Looking ahead

Arizona’s fastest-growing careers tell the story of a state in transition. Health care workers are needed to serve a growing population. Technology professionals are helping power an increasingly digital economy. Manufacturers are expanding production capacity, while logistics workers keep products moving across the region.

For job seekers, the message is clear: careers that require specialized skills — particularly in healthcare, cybersecurity, engineering and supply chain management — are likely to offer some of the strongest opportunities in Arizona for years to come.
