While Colorado River faces shortage, officials look to expand storage on Salt and Verde rivers

Much attention has been given to the future of the Colorado River water supply, which has been in historic shortage in recent years. However, the Valley’s other main water supply on the Salt and Verde rivers has the opposite issue — having more water than it can store.

Salt River Project, which manages the system, is looking at ways to expand water storage capacity to capitalize on wet seasons like this past winter, capturing water before it can spill out of reservoirs.

Cynthia Campbell, water resources management adviser for the city of Phoenix, said actions taken during good seasons are just as important for water managers as those during drought.
