The Fountain Hills Democratic Club (FHDC) held its first meeting of the year Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Community Center with a focus on creating a culture where everyone feels welcome, safe and appreciated.

Two speakers shared their insights on this topic.

Hira Ismail, training and digital program specialist for one·n·ten, highlighted the work of the Phoenix-based nonprofit organization, which focuses on empowering LGBTQ+ youth and young adults in Arizona.

Ismail discussed her role in providing training on LGBTQ+ inclusivity and digital programming.

She emphasized the importance of advocating for marginalized populations and creating spaces where youth can thrive, according to FHDC Spokesperson Kathy Schanus-Gohl.

one·n·ten serves as a vibrant community for LGBTQ+ youth, with a youth center in downtown Phoenix and several satellite sites across the state offering support, activities and a safe space for connection.

Joseph Darius Zafaari, founder and editor-in-chief of LOOKOUT News, introduced the publication’s mission of providing independent and impactful news for Arizona’s LGBTQ+ community.

Founded in 2022, LOOKOUT focuses on accountability journalism and covers diverse topics, including politics, education, culture, health and safety, Schanus-Gohl said.
