Contrary to the letter in last week’s Times, I found the Chinese Lantern Festival to be a wonderful asset for our town, and I’m glad it will return for two more years!
Though I am not typically a fan, I must congratulate Mayor Linda Kavanagh for her alertness and drive to bring the festival to Fountain Hills. Tempe’s loss is our gain!
The displays are magnificent, especially when lighted after dark. The stage shows demonstrate unique artistry and introduce many of us to a new cultural heritage. The admission price is reasonable for the tremendous spectacle presented. And even the food is good! My date and I had a very nice evening.

The “worst” part of the experience was that most local restaurants were too full of patrons who were attracted to the event. It’s great business for Fountain Hills merchants!
The complaint about the closed sidewalk is bogus. The sidewalk along Saguaro Blvd. is fully open; I walk it regularly. One closed sidewalk route is a cheap price to pay to have such a wonderful celebration in our midst.
