Safeway in Fountain Hills named in proposed Albertsons-Kroger merger

Outcome still unknown as regulators deliberate

The Safeway in Fountain Hills was listed as one of the 101 Arizona-based stores to be sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers in the proposed $24.6 billion merger of Kroger and Albertsons as state officials continue to fight it, citing monopoly concerns in the U.S. food retail market.

If the merger is successful, all Safeway stores in Arizona would remain open and retain their Safeway banner under the new ownership of C&S, according to the most recent divestiture agreement.

C&S operates supermarket brands like Grand Union and Piggly Wiggly,  which has store locations throughout the Midwest, East Coast and southern United States.
