Boys basketball plays through winter break

Things seem to be falling into place for the Fountain Hills High School boys basketball team, which took part in the Coyotes Basketball Invitational over winter break.
The Falcons’ first game of the tournament was against Tempe Prep on Dec. 27. The Falcons won that game 51-22.
The next day the Falcons played against Horizon Honors and lost 49-38.
Later that day FHHS took on Northwest Christian and won 47-42.
The final game of the tournament was on Dec. 29 against Chandler prep, were the Falcons lost 35-27.
The Falcons have four games this week, with the first one being this past Monday, Jan. 7, against Scottsdale Christian Academy.
The next game for FHHS is today, Jan. 9, at home. The game is against Northwest Christian and starts at 7 p.m.
On Jan. 10, the Falcons have an away game against Gilbert Christian and the final game this week is on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Falcons will be going up against Pusch Ridge Christian Academy starting at 6:30 p.m.
Head coach Jeff Bonner said he is happy with the progress his team showed over the break, both during games and during practice.
“It was nice having the break,” Bonner said. “It gave us the ability and time to train and go over plays. We got to ask the guys questions we might not have gotten the chance to and, in turn, got those answers we would have never gotten. It was positive. A lot of teaching and a lot of learning.”
In the games over winter break, Bonner saw the Falcons start to work together as one cohesive unit, as compared to a bunch of individuals playing a pick-up game.
“The games we won, our defense was really tight,” Bonner said. “You can tell the team is committing to playing a team defense and having that strong defense gives us more confidence in our offense.”
All FHHS has to do now is translate that unity to its offense where the Falcons are still struggling due to a lack of communication.
“Our offense, in little increments, is getting better,” Bonner said. “The guys are trying to run it and looking for their reads but the last part is just communication. Because a guard can read a position all day long but, if he doesn’t tell one of the other players where that is, nothing will happen.”
