Fountain Hills Theater presents musical comedy ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’

First of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy begins Aug. 16

Fountain Hills Theater announces part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy, “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” opening Friday, Aug. 16.

Eugene Jerome lives with his family in Brooklyn who dreams of baseball and girls and copes with his formidable mother, overworked father and his worldly older brother. Throw in his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two daughters and there is a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style.

FHT is privileged to be among the few theater companies to present all three of Simon’s award-winning plays in a single season, according to a press release.

Winner of three Tony Awards, “Brighton Beach Memoirs” is the first of Neil Simon’s Eugene Trilogy which will continue with “Biloxi Blues” in which Eugene, as a young army recruit, goes through basic training as well as learning about life and love with a capital ‘L’ along with some harsher lessons, while stationed at boot camp in Biloxi, Miss., in 1943.

The third of Neil Simon’s autobiographical comedies, “Broadway Bound,” comes to the FHT stage which is set in 1949 and follows Eugene and his brother Stanley who are determined to become professional comedy writers.

When the brothers use the trials and tribulations of their dysfunctional family as inspiration, the Jerome clan may never be the same.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” opens Aug. 16, followed by “Biloxi Blues” opening Nov. 8 and concluding with “Broadway Bound,” which opens Feb. 28.

Elias Matthews, who starred in last season’s “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime,” will portray the pivotal role of Eugene Jerome in all three plays.

Also starring are Adam Guinn, Cindy Covington, Michael McGraw, Kristin Moran, Alexandra Palmatier and Aurora Howard.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” will play Aug. 16 through Sept. 1 with performances Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

All performances take place at Fountain Hills Theater, 11445 N. Saguaro Blvd.

For reservations, call 480-837-9661 x3 or visit fhtaz.org. Individual tickets are $40 for adults and $18 for youth 17 and under.
