Boys & Girls Club McKee Branch in Fountain Hills receives donation

Contribution from Nelson estate

The estate of the late Josephine “Jo” Nelson has made a donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale Mary Ellen & Robert McKee Branch in Fountain Hills.

The donated amount of $25,000 will be earmarked for renovations to the facility’s teen center, according to branch Director Lauren Stratton.

“This gift will be transformational for a space that has been overlooked,” said Stratton. “I’ve been wanting to refresh the center for quite some time.”

The planned renovation will include fresh paint throughout the four unique spaces including mini kitchen, lounge/chill space, entry and games room/recreation areas. Stratton also would like to create a “pass through” from the facility’s kitchen to the main space – making access more user friendly.

“Teens are attracted to spaces that feel comfortable but are also fun and new,” Stratton added. “With this donation and project, we can attract even more teens to consider membership here.

“We sincerely appreciate this gift and for considering the club as a recipient.”

Nelson was a long-time resident of Fountain Hills who passed away in late December 2023. Prior to her passing, she designated local attorney Tait Elkie and former Town Councilman Mike Scharnow as trustees for her estate.

Her instructions to them were to donate her trust proceeds toward Fountain Hills non-profits and causes that catered toward children, teens and families.

“We decided that a significant contribution to the local Boys & Girls Club branch would be an excellent use of Jo’s money and something that Jo would approve of and make her smile,” Elkie said. “There was a special place in her heart for kids and teens.”

Although retired, Nelson was active in several groups and activities, including the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church choir, the Noon Kiwanis Club, Teen Court and others.

“Jo was quite active with our Kiwanis Club and volunteered regularly for many of our projects, including helping at our art fair booth, the local food bank, Phoenix Rescue Mission, Ronald McDonald House, Breakfast with Santa and others,” said Scharnow, a past Noon Kiwanis president. “She was always willing to volunteer wherever help was needed. This is a fitting tribute to Jo and her legacy.”

Her trust has also donated $5,000 to the Presbyterian Church in honor of its 50th anniversary celebration this October, along with establishing an annual $5,000 scholarship in her name through the Golden Eagle Education Foundation to a deserving high school student.
