Grzybowski: In support of Proposition 479

Posted

As the Valley continues to attract people and business from across the country and world, many are attracted to the scenic charm of the Town of Fountain Hills. As a community of 24,000 covering more than 20 square miles, our proximity to a large metropolitan area and major freeways makes us an attractive location.

One important factor that’s allowed us to thrive as a community is our regional investment in roads. For nearly 40 years, Maricopa County has funded proactive transportation projects to stay ahead of the Valley’s growth, like Loops 101 and 202. The renewal of this funding stream will be on the ballot in November as Proposition 479.

The Maricopa Association of Governments estimates that the population of Fountain Hills will continue to grow to nearly 30,000 residents. Because of this anticipated growth, we must continue to invest in our roads, ensuring safe travel for our residents.

Prop 479 will add 331 highway lane miles, 134 HOV lane miles, and 1000 new or improved local road miles. It will cut the average afternoon commute by one-third, reducing congestion by 51,000 hours on critical freight corridors each day. Additionally, investments to the region’s “grid” street network will improve safety and mobility in our town and across the Valley.

Improving roads allows residents and those traveling through the area to get in and out of town easily. From widening Shea Boulevard to making trips to a ball game or the airport more convenient. This regional plan benefits us all.

Transportation projects do not happen overnight. It takes many years of planning, budgeting and building to stay ahead of the demand and remain competitive for the next several decades. By supporting Proposition 479, we can ensure that Fountain Hills remains a vibrant and safe community.
