DPS focus on seatbelt use

Posted

From May 20 to June 2, the Department of Public Safety will be focusing on seatbelt compliance throughout Arizona.

The enforcement campaign, “Buckle Up Arizona...It’s the Law,” is funded through the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and is a part of a national campaign. GOHS has provided additional funding for extra highway patrol staffing during the enforcement period and this extra funding is critical to the success of the campaign.

During 2010, there were 497 fatalities on state roadways. In 232 of those, or 47 percent, seatbelts were not used. By using a seatbelt, the risk of fatal injuries to a front seat occupant can be reduced by 45 percent.

During the seatbelt campaign, DPS Officers will be targeting seatbelt violations statewide with the ultimate goal of creating a safer traveling environment on our roadways and saving lives.
